Words With “th”

Th is a digraph: two letters, t and h, that team up to make one sound. English actually has two th sounds. There’s the soft, voiced one in this and that, where your voice buzzes, and the sharper, unvoiced one in thin and bath, where it doesn’t. Kids don’t need the labels, but it helps to notice both so neither feels wrong.

Sort the words by where the th sits. At the start (this, think), at the end (bath, teeth), and listen for the two sounds as you go. Because th shows up in so many of the most common words a beginner reads, a little focused practice here pays off across everything else they read.
