CVC Words
The first words every new reader can sound out on their own, one consonant, one short vowel, one consonant, with no surprises.

CVC words, consonant-vowel-consonant, are the first words most kids ever sound out on their own. Each letter makes exactly one sound, and the vowel is always short, so there are no surprises. That predictability is the whole point: it lets a new reader succeed by using the rule, which builds the confidence to try the next word.
Work through one vowel at a time. All the short-a words (cat, hat, map), then short e, and so on. Blend slowly at first (/c/ /a/ /t/), then speed up until the word snaps together. Once CVC words feel easy, silent-e words are the natural next step.
