Second grade leans hard on the silent-e rule: the e on the end of cake and bike says nothing itself, but it makes the vowel before it say its name. Contrast it with the short-vowel words from earlier grades and the rule gets clearer. Cap has a short a. Cape has a long a. One letter changes everything.
The blends (stop, frog, clap, swim) keep two consonants working side by side, each keeping its own sound. And the high-frequency words (because, friend, people) are the ones second graders reach for constantly in their own writing, so they’re worth extra reps.
