Silent e is the rule that unlocks long vowels. Add an e to the end of a short word and the vowel changes its sound to its name: cap becomes cape, kit becomes kite, cub becomes cube. The e itself stays silent. Kids sometimes call it “magic e” or “bossy e” because it reaches back over a letter to do its job.
The clearest way to teach it is with pairs. Write the short-vowel word, then add the e and read both. Hearing cap and cape back to back makes the rule land faster than any explanation. Once the long-a words are solid, move through the other vowels one at a time.
