Long Vowel Sounds

The five long vowel sounds, the four ways English spells each one, and how to teach them once your child has the short vowels.

Frequently asked questions

What does "long vowel" mean in simple terms?

A long vowel is a vowel that says its own name. The a in cake says "ay", which is the name of the letter a. The a in cat does not, and that is a short vowel. It has nothing to do with holding the sound longer.

What are examples of long vowels for kids?

Cake, rain and day for long a. Feet, leaf and happy for long e. Bike, light and my for long i. Bone, boat and snow for long o. Cube, blue and moon for long u. Each row is one sound spelled three different ways, which is the part that takes time.

How are long vowels different from short vowels?

A long vowel says the letter's own name and a short vowel does not. Cap has a short a and cape has a long a. Kit becomes kite, hop becomes hope, cub becomes cube. Short vowels are taught first, and most children read short-vowel words for months before a long vowel turns up.

Why do we call them "long" vowels?

The name is a leftover and it is misleading. In American phonics teaching, "long" means the vowel says its name, not that the sound is held longer. Stretching the a in cat does not turn it into the a in cake; it turns it into a different sound altogether.

What age should kids learn about long vowels?

Usually first grade, after short vowels are secure. Common Core places final -e and vowel team conventions in first grade (RF.1.3c), and the Wonster Words app puts its five long vowel lessons at kindergarten through second grade level. A child still reading cat, pig and sun is not late; they are in the right place.

How can you tell a long vowel sound when you hear it?

Say the alphabet letter, then say the word. If the vowel in the word sounds like the letter's name, it is long. Bike has the name of the letter i in the middle of it; big does not. This works better than any rule about spelling, because the spelling is the part that changes.

Is y a long vowel?

Y is not a vowel letter, but it spells two long vowel sounds at the end of a word: long i in my, fly and sky, and long e in happy, baby and funny. The short rule is that a one-syllable word ending in y usually says long i, and a longer word ending in y usually says long e.
