What is Wonster Words?
The award-winning app that turns learning to read into the game kids ask for.
Wonster Words teaches reading the way the research says children learn it — phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, spelling — and hides that structure inside games. Built by 77Sparx Studio with educators and speech-language pathologists, it is loved by kids ages 2–8 and the parents who hear them sounding out words at the dinner table.
- What it is: a science-of-reading app where phonics, spelling, and vocabulary play like games — word building, word searches, and animated word stories with googly-eyed letter characters.
- Who it’s for: children ages 2–8 learning to read, and the parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists helping them.
- What makes it different: expert-built content underneath, genuine fun on the surface — every game targets a real early-reading skill, and every finished word unlocks an animation that makes its meaning stick.
- Safe by design: ad-free, works offline, never markets to children, with parent-directed features behind a parent gate.

The learning approach
Wonster Words is grounded in the science of reading — the decades of research on how children actually learn to read. It starts with the sounds of language and the letters that represent them, then layers on the words and meaning that turn decoding into real reading. The app follows that order deliberately, so each skill rests on the one before it.
- Phonemic awareness — hearing and playing with the individual sounds in words.
- Phonics — matching sounds to letters and blending them into words, from CVC words through digraphs, blends, vowel teams, and silent-e patterns.
- Sight words & vocabulary — growing the words a child recognizes, knows, and understands, with every finished word unlocking an animation that shows what it means.
- Spelling — turning sounds back into written words, aligned with the patterns taught from kindergarten through 2nd grade.
- Speech and language — practice that supports how children say and use words, shaped by the speech-language pathologists on the team.
The same sequence is browsable on this site asspelling words by grade andword lists by phonics pattern; the full approach is athow it works.
Safety & privacy
Parent-facing reviewers score safety explicitly, so here are the answers pre-written — and checkable against our Privacy Policy:
- Ad-free. No third-party ads anywhere in the app.
- No marketing to children. Purchase and account features sit behind a parent gate.
- Designed for children's privacy. Built to operate in line with children's-privacy law (COPPA); we collect the minimum needed to run the app and never sell personal data.
- Works offline. No connection needed once content is downloaded — planes, cars, and waiting rooms included.
Reviewer access
Wonster Words is free to download, but the full library sits behind a subscription — and a review written from the free tier isn't a review of the product families actually use. We provide free access to reviewers.
Email us at [email protected] with your outlet, where the review will run, and whether you're reviewing on an iOS device — the prefilled template covers it. A human reads every request and replies by email.
