Long E Words

Ee is the safer guess of the two long e teams, and it is the one to teach first. Feet, seed, green. Two letters spelling one sound, so feet has four letters and three sounds.

The sound boxes below make that visible. Feet gets three boxes and ee goes in the middle one whole. A child who has been counting letters rather than sounds finds this the hardest thing on the page, and it is the thing the boxes exist to fix.

Ea spells the same sound as ee, and no rule tells you which one a word uses. Leaf, meal, beach. Both teams sit in the middle of a word and both are common, so this is the pair a child learns one word at a time rather than by applying anything.

Ea is also the team that goes both ways. It says long e in leaf and meal, short e in bread and head, and long a in great and break. That is three sounds from one pair of letters, and it is why ea is worth more practice than its frequency alone suggests.

A y at the end of a word with more than one syllable says long e. Happy, baby, funny, puppy. In a one-syllable word the same letter says long i instead: my, fly, sky. That is one of the few long-vowel spelling rules a five-year-old can actually use, and it is worth teaching as a rule.

Ey is a short list rather than a pattern. Key, money, honey and a handful more. It sits at the end of a word like y does, and a child meets it often enough to be worth naming.

This is the spelling a child meets first in their own life, long before they meet it in a phonics lesson: mummy, daddy, teddy, puppy and half the names in their class.

Every other vowel has a silent-e pattern that does most of its work: cake, kite, hope, cube. Long e almost does not. These, eve and theme are close to the whole common set, because English already spells this sound several other ways and never needed one more.

Ie is a short list too, and the three worth knowing are chief, field and piece. The i comes first and the e second, which is the opposite of what a child who has learned ei in their own name might expect.

Both groups get word cards and nothing else. A sorting sheet needs a rule to sort by, and neither of these has one. Silent-e words has the e_e section and the reasoning behind it.

Long e is the one vowel whose short twin barely exists as a pair. For the other four you can say cap and cape, kit and kite, hop and hope, cub and cube, and the silent e does all the explaining. For e there is really only them and theme.

So the contrast is taught with unrelated words instead, which is what the picture sort here does. Say bed and then teeth. Say net and then leaf. The two sounds are easy to tell apart once they are next to each other, and that is all this sheet is for.

Short e also has its own confusion, with short i, which is a different problem and belongs to short e words.

Where to go next depends on which part your child found hard.
