Short Vowel Sounds

The five short vowel sounds with a picture word for each, which two children mix up, and how to teach them without saying the letter's name.

Frequently asked questions

What is a short vowel?

A short vowel is the sound a, e, i, o or u makes in cat, bed, pig, hop and sun. It is one quick sound rather than the letter's name, and it is the sound those letters make most often in short English words. "Short" describes the sound, not the length of the word.

What are the five short vowel sounds?

They are usually taught with a keyword each: a as in apple, e as in egg, i as in igloo, o as in octopus, and u as in umbrella. Say the sound and then the keyword every time, in the same order, so your child has one word to fall back on for each sound.

What is the difference between a short vowel and a long vowel?

A long vowel says the letter's own name and a short vowel does not. Cap has a short a; cape has a long a, and the silent e on the end is what changes it. Kit becomes kite, hop becomes hope, cub becomes cube.

Which short vowels do children mix up most?

Short e and short i, and the reason is physical rather than careless. The two sounds are made with the mouth in almost the same position, so pin and pen sound nearly alike to a child who is still learning to listen. Short o and short u are the next pair, more quietly.

What age do children learn short vowel sounds?

Most children meet them in kindergarten, around five, and many meet some earlier in preschool. The order varies between programmes and between children, so treat any age as a rough guide rather than a schedule. What matters more than when is whether your child can hear the vowel in the middle of a spoken word before they are asked to write it.

Are short vowel words the same as CVC words?

They overlap and are not the same. A CVC word is exactly consonant-vowel-consonant, three letters and three sounds, and its vowel is short, so every CVC word is a short vowel word. But flag, hand and stop also have short vowels and are not CVC. CVC describes the shape of the word; short vowel describes the sound in the middle.
