Word List
Nonsense Words
Nonsense words are made-up words like mip and zot that a child can only read by sounding out. Most typically developing readers do not need them, though they can help at times with segmenting and blending sounds. They are most useful for children who struggle to blend sounds, and for children with articulation difficulties or other speech-sound issues. Start with the quick check below; if your child sounds out those real words, they do not need nonsense words.
Start with the quick check. Twenty real words cover the short-vowel word families, the digraphs and the two-letter blends.
If a sound trips them up, print the drill set for that sound. Each set mixes real words with made-up ones, so your child cannot read the deck from memory and has to say every sound. A small made-up mark in the corner of each made-up card tells you which is which, so you can tell your child. England’s phonics screening check tells children the same thing: its administration guidance has the teacher say, “The words on this side […] are not real words.”
The advice above on who needs made-up words is ours, not a research finding. What are nonsense words? sets it beside the evidence, including where reading researchers disagree. If your child knows letter sounds but cannot yet push them together at all, start with how to help a child blend letter sounds into words.
Start here: a quick check
Can your child sound these out?
Go through these twenty real words with your child before you print anything else. Point to each card and ask your child to say each sound, then the whole word. The set covers short-vowel word families (cat, pig, hot), the digraphs (ship, chop, thin, whip, duck) and two-letter blends (frog, crab, slip, stop).
If your child sounds them out correctly, they do not need nonsense words. Keep reading real words together. If a particular sound trips them up, such as ch or the r-blends, print the drill set for that sound below.

How to use the drill cards
The drill is for a child who knows the basic letter sounds but finds it hard to segment and blend them. The same steps are on the last page of every set.
- Isolate the sounds. Your child points under each letter and says each sound aloud: /s/ /i/ /g/. Two letters such as sh or ck make one sound.
- Blend them together. Your child slides the sounds smoothly into one word: “sig”.
- Move on. Next card. If your child gets stuck, say the sounds with them, blend it once together, and go to the next card.
Keep it to one minute. Set a timer, go through as many cards as you can, and stop when it rings. Repeat the same set on another day. The goal is comfort with segmenting and blending, so smooth matters more than fast.
Watch for memorizing. The made-up words are there to make your child think and sound them out. If your child starts reading a made-up card instantly from memory, switch to a different set, or mix two sets together.
Tell your child which words are made up. Every made-up card has a small made-up mark in the corner. Call them the names of tiny aliens.
Stop when the sounds are easy. Once your child reads real words with that sound without help, put the set away and move to real words and books.
These are not practice for a school reading screener. The University of Oregon, which publishes the DIBELS screener, says in the license on its test materials that “practice and coaching on the materials will invalidate the results.” What the screener measures is in DIBELS explained for parents.
Frequently asked questions
How often should children practice with nonsense words?
Keep each round to one minute at most, a few times a week, and only while your child is still learning to segment and blend the sounds in that set. Repeat the same set on another day rather than adding new ones. Once your child reads real words with those sounds easily, stop.
Does my child need nonsense words at all?
Most typically developing readers do not. Try the twenty real words in the quick check first. A child who sounds those out correctly can keep practicing with real words and books.
Can I make my own nonsense words?
Yes. Take a real word your child can read, change one sound, and check that the new word is not a real word, a name or slang. Sun becomes lun, hot becomes zot. Keep to the sounds your child has been taught.
Are these the same as DIBELS nonsense word practice?
No. These are drill cards for a child learning to blend. The University of Oregon, which publishes DIBELS, says its test materials "should not be used for student practice or coaching," because practice and coaching "will invalidate the results."
